CRC 1208 Lecture - Susanne Fenz, 21st January 2021

Dr. Susanne Fenz, University of Würzburg, Germany, will talk about

“The camel and the eye of the needle,  or The narrow escape problem in model and living membranes“.

Abstract: The narrow escape problem (NEP) is a common problem in biology and biophysics. It deals with Brownian particles confined to a given domain with reflecting borders and only a small escape window where particles are absorbed.

The solution of the NEP is the answer to the question ’How long does it take for the Brownian particle to find  its target?’ Examples of narrow escape situations include neurotransmitters diffusing through the synaptic cleft searching for receptors on the post synapse or surface proteins diffusing on the plasma membrane of African trypanosomes searching for the so-called flagellar pocket which is the sole site for endocytosis.

We study the NEP at different levels of abstraction: (i) in vitro using a model system based on micro-patterned lipid membranes, (ii) in silico with random walk simulations, and (iii) in vivo on the example of trypanosomes.
