4. Selection of candidates will take place in two rounds:
I. First Selection of candidates will be made on basis of the application documents. All applicants will be informed on the outcome of the first selection by email. Candidates passing this round successfully will be invited for the second selection round.
II. Final selection of candidates will be done on basis of an interview by the selection committee. The interview will include an oral presentation, followed by a discussion and a personal interview. Candidates passing this round successfully will be invited to become a CRC 1208 fellow and be integrated to the Graduate School MB Train.

Open Positions, Requirements and Selection Criteria

A strong interest for multidisciplinary research, high motivation and commitment for doctoral studies in membrane biology is required as well as a very good proficiency in writing and speaking of the English language. Application for open positions in the CRC 1208 is open to excellent candidates holding a MSc or Diploma degree in the fields of Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Biophysics or related. Project A01 - details
Strong background in biophysics and membrane protein biochemistry.

Project A06 - details
Profound knowledge of advanced imaging technologies, molecular biology, lipid and protein biochemistry will be advantageous for a successful application.

Project A11 - details
A strong background in synthetic chemistry is required, experience with solid phase synthesis is preferable.

Project A12 - details
A strong background in biophysics or physical chemistry is required, experience with cell culture and super resolution microscopy (STED, FRET) is preferable.

Project A13 - details
The applicant should have been trained in cell biology, physiology, and if possible on some basic bioinformatic tools and a programming language such as PER, during his Masters.

Project B02 - dateils
Candidates should bring good laboratory experience in molecular biology.

Project B05 - details
We are seeking for PhD candidates with experience in biochemical analysis, molecular biology, cell biology, fluorescence microscopy and/or plant biology.

Project B09 - details
Strong background in structural and membrane biology.

Project B12 - details
Strong scientific background and extensive practical experience in at least one of the following fields: mitochondrial biology, membrane biology, cellular quality control, lipid biology.

Project B13 - details
Thus, the ideal applicant should have a completed scientific university education (M.Sc./M.A./ Diploma/Magister) in the field of biology, agricultural sciences or related disciplines and a solid background in live cell imaging and molecular biology.

Underlying Selection Criteria for successful candidates are

  • excellent academic and personal achievements of the applicant, evident from transcripts and other application documents,
  • the course of applicant's studies and applicants research background,
  • motivation, commitment and potential of the applicant to fulfill a doctoral study in the field of membrane biology,
  • the outcome of the recommendations by referees,
  • the outcome and performance during the interview (only final selection round).

What the CRC 1208 offers

The CRC 1208 offers exciting Interdisciplinary Research Projects and integration into an excellent network  and infrastructure of according research groups. Doctoral studies are supervised by a supervision team. The doctoral research project is complemented by innovative Education Programs, including advanced teaching and training in scientific methods and theory, as well as in transferable skills. After completing their studies and PhD thesis, candidates can obtain the german academic degree 'Dr. rer. nat.' (doctor rerum naturae, i.e. doctor of natural sciences) or 'Ph.D.' according to the Rules and Regulation for Doctoral Studies of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf.
Pay grouping depends on personal qualifications up to salary group 13 TV – L. The positions are additionally funded with contributions to research and travel expenses.
